Generally, people consider hobbies as a way to kill boredom, but they play a major role in other aspects of our lives. They are a way to explore and hone our creative skills and follow our passion.

Apart from the hobbies that people follow these days, there are many interesting hobbies that people have forgotten. In this blog, we will come to know about those fun hobbies that are forgotten but can be interesting to pursue.

Rediscovering Fun Hobbies

Postage Stamp Collection

Postage Stamp collection is one of the fun hobbies that lost its charm in the age of digitalisation. It is popularly known as Philately and its history dates back to 1840 when it originated in the United Kingdom.

Stamp collection became a popular hobby when people started collecting stamps as souvenirs. The philatelist established clubs where people met, showcased and exchanged stamps.

Stamp collectors loved the artistic beauty of the stamps, as those tiny pieces of paper depicted the creator’s meticulous art, vibrant colours, historical monuments, symbols, and imminent personalities.

People travelled to different countries only to collect stamps and to add them to their collections. It helped them learn more about a country’s geography, history and culture.

However, the fun hobby of stamp collection took a toll when the world chose the path of digitalisation and postal services was discontinued in most countries. However, this hobby remains interesting for enthusiasts who still appreciate art.

Coin Collection

Numismatic is the art of collecting and studying coins, and currencies as a souvenir. It’s as a hobby that can be traced back to the 14th century.

It is a fun hobby which involves appreciating art, culture, history and other important aspects of the country that the coin depicted. A person who has an eye for detail & is interested in travelling is more inclined to coin collection.

Coin collection is one of the oldest fun hobbies known to us humans. In earlier times, traders and travellers collected coins as souvenirs of their journey. However, the majority of them were either affluent.

As time passed by, coin collection as a fun hobby became popular among the masses. People kept coins as a hobby and collected them whenever they got a chance.

Coin collection was turned into an investment. People who had a good collection of ancient coins could sell them to earn a hefty amount of money depending upon the demand for the coin.

Those who didn’t sell their coins passed them to the next generation, and in some cases, it became a family hobby or business. However, in today’s time, there are very few people who take an interest in it.

Rock Collection

Talking about fun hobbies, how can we forget rock collection? It is quite an interesting hobby for those who find it amusing to collect beautiful rocks, pebbles, and precious stones. This hobby not only provides people with a way to connect with nature but also helps them with learning geology and petrology.

For a rock collector, every stone has a story to tell as it endured the pain and experienced the time.

Rock collection also involves collecting precious stones which is a lucrative business for some.

To collect precious stones, people go hiking and explore places and all this provides them with a thrilling experience. This hobby is still practised a lot but not to the extent it used to be followed earlier.

Calligraphy

For the artistic people who love to write, calligraphy is an art to express. The origin of calligraphy is still debated, some believe it to be originated in China, and others believe it originated in Japan or Ancient Egypt. However, it is still unknown to us.

Ancient artisans chose calligraphy to decorate walls, artefacts, and other things. This legacy was carried forward and people turned it into a hobby. Still, in today’s time, calligraphy is deeply rooted in Chinese, Japanese, and Islamic cultures among others.

However, this art has lost its lustre due to the modern generation being ignorant and apathetic towards it.

Bird Watching

People who love nature, appreciate its beauty and have the patience to spend some time with it, enjoy bird watching. In the hustle and bustle of modern life, people don’t have time to connect with nature, nonetheless, bird watching can be a way to address this.

History of bird watching can be traced back to ancient Greece where nature lovers observed birds and documented their observations for research. The invention of binoculars was the watershed moment for bird watchers. They could watch and easily observe birds sitting at a distance.

The bird enthusiast would wait for migration season to observe migratory birds, click pictures, and document their observations. Such a contribution in this field opened a new horizon for ornithology.

There is a scant number of nature lovers who still practise bird watching, given that modern life has become tedious.

Whittling

Whittling, also popularly known as wood carving with a knife, was one of the interesting hobbies people used to have. It has roots in ancient times somewhere near 400 BCE. when metalwork was nearly not so popular and people were more dependent on wood and stones.

As a hobby and a way to survive, whittling helped people create combs, spoons, and small furniture.

Nowadays, whittling has become extinct as carpentry has taken its place. However, there are very few people worldwide who still pursue whittling as a hobby. It is a hobby which allows an individual to showcase their creativity through a limited number of resources.
